SUSE, an Attachmate Business Unit, and Xamarin, a startup co-founded by Mono legend Miguel de Icaza, are partnering to provide continued support for Mono, the open-source .NET Framework.  The agreement grants Xamarin a broad, perpetual license to all intellectual property covering Mono, MonoTouch, Mono for Android, and Mono Tools for Visual Studio.  Xamarin will assume support for these products and continue to develop and sell them.  Existing customers can purchase upgrades.  Priority support is also available for an extra fee.

Xamarin’s immediate plans for both MonoTouch and Mono for Android is to make sure that the major bugs are fixed.  I just received notification today that a critical bug open in MonoTools since last October has finally been assigned to be fixed.  This is excellent news for .NET developers and provides further evidence that .NET isn’t dead.  Xamarin provides the best way to build fast, native .NET apps on iOS and Android.

MonoMac 1.0

MonoMac is an open-source framework by Novell to build native desktop applications for OSX using C# or your favorite .NET language.  The Mono team leveraged a lot of the code that they built for MonoTouch binding to the CocoaTouch APIs.  You can use MonoMac to publish applications to the Mac AppStore.

MonoMac’s source code comes with more than 40 samples showing how to use different components of the MacOS X APIs.  Each sample comes with a MonoDevelop solution that can be built by loading the IDE, or you can build all the samples in one go using Makefiles.  The samples cover basic MacOS GUI applications, AppKit applications, creating Document-based applications, Key-value programming, CoreAnimation, QuickTime, OpenGL as well as showing how to use smaller APIs in self-contained samples.

MonoMac is included in a MonoDevelop addin that can be used to build, run and debug MonoMac apps.  The addin requires MonoDevelop 2.4.2 on a Macintosh computer.

Novell has released a preview version Moonlight 4, an open source Linux implementation of Microsoft’s Silverlight framework.  Moonlight 4 is the first major release since Moonlight 2 was released in 2009.

“Our team has worked tirelessly to get Moonlight to version parity with Silverlight 3 – finally bringing the latest development and delivery capabilities for visually-rich applications to Linux,” said Miguel de Icaza, Developer Platform vice president at Novell.  “Now that we’ve reached this milestone, we are looking to complete the 4.0 APIs.”

Moonlight is part of a technical collaboration announced by Novell and Microsoft in September 2007.  Microsoft provided Novell with access to its test suites and specifications for Silverlight, and provides Moonlight users with free access to the Microsoft Media Pack, a set of licensed media codecs for video and audio.

MonoDroid © Novell Inc.

Mono for Android brings .NET development capabilities to the Android mobile platform.  MonoDroid uses a slimmed-down library profile that is better suited for mobile devices.  The entire set of Android Dalvik APIs has been wrapped in C#.  The OpenTK library is also supported, so you can use the same OpenGL logic across the Windows, Linux, iOS and Android platforms.  MonoDroid supports the full JIT, so you can use Reflection.Emit and dynamic code compilation.

MonoDroid is now available in public beta.  It will eventually be released as a commercial product.

MonoMac is a new foundation for building Cocoa applications on OSX using Mono.  MonoMac is the result of years of experimentation in blending .NET with Objective-C and is inspired by the same design principles that Novell used to develop MonoTouch.
